Most of our first experiences have been sustenance from the breast of the mother (or at least an attempt for this connection), milk from the breast of the mother – nipples are something we should ALL be familiar with. Yes they are beautiful and can be very sexy, but they are not limited to sexual expression and sensations, they are intricate, powerful, receptors! We need to release the sexual connotation and misconception of women’s nipples being inappropriate in public spaces, doing so empowers women in their wholeness, as well as protects women from sexual misconduct, as we normalise this part of the body.
By releasing sexual limitation/association of women’s nipples, we free them from unwanted, perverted attention, we relax the space of women to express themselves authentically, and we introduce a new space where the body is honoured for its power, its wholeness, its association with women as mother, sister and lover. Sexualising the nipple, deeming it as inappropriate for public and all age viewing, associates the nipple with woman as lover only. As children grow, they jump from the purity of a nipple being associated with their mother and their mother’s breast milk, to something only appropriate to be seen and shared with their lover – the association of women with nipples as their mother and their sister is lost. Nipples are now only reserved for their lover, hence sexualising that part of the body.
I feel creating a space where the view of nipples of women within our greater community, enables a freer, more relaxed space where women are all associated with the connection of their role as mother, sister and also lover. We therefore learn as a community to honour ALL women, we learn to honour the wholeness of women and their changing roles within the community, we learn to recognise women as a mother, sister, and lover, and respect them regardless of the role they may be playing to us directly – we learn to respect and protect all women within our community, we easily recognise each other as someone’s (and our) mother, sister, and lover, it releases separation and initiates deeper levels of compassion.
The importance of freeing the nipple is not surface layer, and is not limited to the aesthetics of modern day social media posts on Instagram, it runs deeper than that, hence social media platforms banning the free expression of the nipple I feel is damaging beyond what we can fully comprehend. This subject runs much deeper, and it take the courage of more of us willing to show up in our natural state, in our natural environments.
